In Ohio, we know the drill: one day you’re wearing a light jacket to a Guardians game, and the next, the humidity hits you like a wet wool blanket. When that 90°F heatwave finally settles over Northeast Ohio, your air conditioner becomes the most important member of your household.
The question is: Is your AC actually up for the challenge?
Nobody wants to wake up in a puddle of sweat on a humid July morning only to realize the vents are blowing room-temperature air. To help you avoid a mid-summer meltdown, here are five warning signs that your cooling system might be on its last legs.
1. The “Double-Digit” Birthday
Most central air conditioning units are designed to last between 10 to 15 years. If your unit is celebrating its 12th birthday this year, it’s officially entered its “golden years.”
While it might still be running, older units have to work significantly harder to combat Ohio’s heavy humidity. If your system uses R-22 refrigerant (Freon), which has been phased out, a major leak could end up costing nearly as much as a new unit.
2. Your Repairman is on Speed Dial
A repair here and there is normal maintenance. However, if you’ve had to call Beckwith twice in the last year for two different issues, your AC is trying to tell you something.
We usually recommend the 50% Rule: If the cost of a repair is more than 50% of the value of the system, it’s time to stop patching the leaks and start looking at an upgrade. Investing in a new, reliable system is often cheaper in the long run than “zombifying” an old one.
3. Humidity is Winning the Battle
An air conditioner’s job isn’t just to cool the air; it’s to dehumidify it. Ohio summers are notoriously “sticky.” If your home feels clammy or your skin feels tacky even when the AC is running, your system is failing to pull moisture from the air.
Pro Tip: If you notice fog on the inside of your windows or a musty “locker room” smell, your AC’s evaporator coil might be struggling to keep up.
4. Strange Noises and “Mystery Smells”
Your AC should be relatively quiet—a steady hum and the woosh of air. If you start hearing the following, take note:

Have you noticed your electric bills climbing even though you haven’t changed your thermostat habits? As AC components wear out, the system has to run longer cycles to reach the same temperature.
Modern units are significantly more efficient than those built even a decade ago. If your bills are skyrocketing, you’re essentially paying for a new AC every month—you just don’t have the comfort of owning one yet.
